2007 Brevard County School Facts

 

 

·        There are 85 schools that comprise Brevard County School District

·        There are 67 school districts in the state of Florida.

·        Brevard has 11 high schools rated A (only 69 in the state).  No other school district has more than seven high schools rated A.

·        88% of all Brevard schools are rated A

·        97% of all Brevard schools are either A or B

·        23 of Brevard’s 27 secondary schools are rated A

·        24 of Brevard’s 29 Title 1 schools are rated A.  School Superintendent Richard DiPatri routinely moves high performing principals to Title 1 schools to stimulate improvement.

·        Brevard ranks 5th in the nation for the number of Nationally Board Certified Teachers

·        Of 22 FCAT data points, Brevard ranks in the top 7 Florida school districts with 18.

·         From 2002 - 2007, Brevard has seen a significant decrease in the percentage of students at Level 1:

Reading: 21% to 12.7%                 Math: 17% to 10%

·        20 of the 28 Music Demonstration Schools in the state of Florida are in Brevard.

·        Brevard has the highest percentage of students scoring 3 or better on Advance Placement tests. (Brevard 62.5%, State 42.7% Global 59.6%)

·        Brevard has the 2nd highest graduation rate in the state.

·        Brevard has the 2nd lowest drop out rate in the state.

·        Brevard high school guidance counselors do nothing but counsel.  Guidance specialists have been hired for other duties.

·        In 2007, Brevard County School District won the Governor’s Sterling Award.  The Governor’s Sterling Award is based on the same criteria as the national Malcolm Baldridge award for operational excellence.

·        Dr. Richard DiPatri was named Florida’s Superintendent of the Year for 2006.

·        Free breakfast is available to ALL children in ALL Brevard schools.

·        Before & After Care programs are available in ALL Brevard elementary schools.

·        Brevard has not increased its school lunch prices in 15 years.

·        Brevard County has the highest number of dual enrollment students in the state (enrolled in high school and college simultaneously).  

·        Military families may send their children to any school they choose, regardless of boundaries.

·        Brevard County School Board has adopted graduation requirements that eliminate the complete “freedom of choice” previously available to students.  In essence, high school students are compelled to take certain classes to ensure adequate preparation for either college or a vocation.
